The town of La Mata is classed as part of Torrevieja but is different in so many ways. Many people choose this area to visit or buy a property as it still has that special Spanish feel to it. There are a good number of bars, restaurants and shops that are open all year around making it a perfect place to buy a permanent residence or winter holiday home. Throughout the year, every Wednesday, you will find the colourful and busy La Mata street market - ?mercadillo? in Spanish!. This market has an array of fruits and vegetables to choose from, the local produce is both fresh and vibrant in colour and flavor, making the local cuisine somewhat unique and rustic.

 

 

La Mata is very popular with Spanish residents coming from Madrid as this is when many of the Spanish tourists as well as foreigners descend on to the Costs to their second home. One of the major reasons that La Mata is so popular is the fact it has one of the nicest beaches on The Costa Blanca. Stretching to a length of 2.3km, which is basically the length of La Mata town, means even in the busiest months of July and August there is still plenty of room to enjoy days spent relaxing on the beach.  La Mata has a promenade that runs alongside the entire beach where you can find numerous bars and restaurants catering for holiday makers and residents alike... If you enjoy a little adventure on the waves, La Mata beach provides a number of water activities which are growing each year. Surf Paddle ? an increasingly popular activity, along with jet ski rental, banana boat rides, and paragliding are just a few of the fun things you and your family can get up to.

 

 

 

La Mata not only has incredible beaches but also a large expanse of sand dunes. To the South of the town these sand dunes make up the "Water Mill Park" where the highly recommended boat-shaped ?The Queen Mississippi? restaurant is located, which overlooks the park and out over the Med. To the North of the town the dunes continue to stretch all the way up to the next town called Guardamar.

 

 

 

Something quite special about Torrevieja and La Mata are their Lagunas (Salt Lakes) and Natural Park. A protected area, this covers 3,700 Ha and is beautiful. It´s environmental values have been globally recognized since 1972 with the RAMSAR Convention. A landscape of rear beauty, Torreviejas Salt lake is pink and has its own salt mine, with the La Mata Salt Lake being green in colour and is where the park?s Interpretation Centre is located. As well as being a protected natural environment, these lakes provide a special micro-climate to the area, which makes it an important and highly desired tourist and health destination. For those that love to take a relaxing walk or cycle in the fresh air, surrounded by nature, this reserve is the most tranquil place you will find so close to the coast. You can visit the parks information center and discover the various possibilities this park has to offer ? without doubt, it is the ideal place for those who love nature tourism.
